CASPAR DAVID FRIEDRICH (1774–1840)
Caspar David Friedrich was born on September 5, 1774, in Greifswald, the sixth of ten children. The old Hanseatic city on the Baltic Sea had about five thousand inhabitants at the time and had belonged to the Kingdom of Sweden since the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Friedrich's youth was shaped by his father's strict Protestant faith and by several strokes of fate: he lost his mother early; in 1787, his younger brother Johann Christoffer drowned while rescuing Caspar David from the icy Greifswald moat.
