The Hamburger Kunsthalle, consisting of three prominent buildings near the Alster, houses a significant public art collection and offers a tour through eight centuries of art history. The permanent exhibition includes over 700 works with focal points such as North German medieval painting, 17th-century Dutch painting, 19th-century German painting, and Classical Modernism. The Kupferstichkabinett (Department of Prints and Drawings), with more than 130,000 drawings, is one of the most important in Germany. The Kunsthalle also presents contemporary art by artists such as Bruce Nauman, Gerhard Richter, and Rosemarie Trockel.
