Willi Baumeiser almost never let any of his drawings go out of the house. He cherished the importance of every sketch used for preparation as much as those which "entirely take the place of a painting." Although his drawings came about by analogy to the paintings, he never simply repeated only preset painting solutions, but rather frequently achieved the formation of an original pictorial language through genuine drawing technique. The survey given here, based on introductory essays and a selection of 140 carefully reproduced works, allows such access to Willi Baumeister's main artistic concerns. This publication is the counterpart to the monograph on the paintings which is being published at the same time. An up-to-date foundation for the extensive appreciation of one of the most important German artists of the 20th century is provided here with the supplementing examination of two of the most important complexes of works by Willi Baumeister.
