The secret lies in the shadows. Tina Gillen (*1972 inLuxembourg) presents details of buildings, mountains, and architectural fragments in her paintings that appear to flash by and of which only a fleeting impression remains. These “off-road” pieces of scenery are invariably mysterious—a choreography of sinister cast shadows or the unnatural, ostensibly magical absence of all shadows transforms commonplace objects and everyday places into theatrical stage settings. In her most recent works, Gillen cross-fades and interlocks the pictorial elements, and in doing so, achieves a dense, richly charged atmosphere in which linear perspective seems to have been rescinded. This first monograph to deal with Tina Gillen’s oeuvre presents all of the works she has produced since 1996. Exhibition schedule: Galerie der Stadt Remscheid, November 22, 2008–January 18, 2009
