One of a Thousand Ways to Defeat Entropy
This volume is part of the official program accompanying the 2011 Venice Biennale and presents four internationally recognized contemporary artists, each represented by work on the theme of entropy commissioned specifically for the exhibition. Alexander Ponomarev’s previous career with the Russian navy left an indelible mark on his creative practice, which is dominated by large-scale aquatic installations. At the Arsenale Novissimo, Tesa 89, he debuts his monumental installation Formula. Nearby, an immersive audiovisual piece by the Japanese multimedia artist Ryoichi Kurokawa fuses natural and digital forms to spectacular effect, addressing global cooperation with respect to energy issues. Romanian painter Adrian Ghenie, known for his dramatic, expressive paintings, creates his largest work to date, while Belgian artist Hans Op de Beeck continues his acclaimed Location series with a “total installation.” Besides documenting current works, this volume also contains an overview of the artists’ previous works.
