When people say "art market," they usually think of paintings or sculptures worth millions. While this is certainly true, the reality also looks quite different: a surprising parallelism of individual markets exists that are also interesting beyond contemporary or classical painting. It's not a general rule or a common characteristic, but rather a multitude of markets – some no larger than the oft-cited niche – that define the landscape. Champagne and chinoiserie, graphics and sculptures, comics and vintage cars – who would want to define neighborhoods there, apart from the shared marketplace? This is what's special about the art market: it concerns itself with the exceptional. Thus, upon closer inspection, a panorama of art markets unfolds where there's nothing that doesn't exist.
