Fred Herzog in top form. His images from the heyday of Kodachrome photography are legendary: street shots of the 1950s and 1960s bathed in warm red-orange tones, precise observations of people and their movements in the city. Often poetic, sometimes witty, always from a respectful distance, yet with an intimate atmosphere. Herzog, who lived in Vancouver from 1953, created a colorful monument to the city. He also traveled to the United States, Barbados, Curaçao, Guatemala, and Mexico, always with his Leica in his luggage. At a time when professional photography relied almost exclusively on black and white, Herzog's position is something special. These photographs were selected by Andy Sylvester, Special Trustee of the Estate of Fred Herzog in conjunction with Equinox Gallery, and continue his important legacy.
Fred Herzog (1930–2019), who grew up in Stuttgart, Germany, immigrated to Vancover, Canada, in 1953, where he initially worked as a medical photographer. He later taught at the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University. He has had major solo exhibitions in Berlin, New York, Paris, Toronto, and Vancover. Hatje Cantz recently published Modern Color (2017) and Black and White (2022).

»So gelten Herzogs Arbeiten heute als Meilensteine der Streetfotografie, was der Bildband A Color Legacy eindrucksvoll zeigt.«

»En refermant le livre, on garde la sensation d’avoir parcouru des rues lointaines tout en redécouvrant la banalité lumineuse du monde. C’est finalement ce mélange de mémoire, de regard et de modernité qui fait la force de cet héritage visuel. «
