| Illustrations for poems, books, and letters; pen-and-ink drawings in color; and charming watercolors—Hermann Hesse as painter
Artists often have multiple talents. Besides his work as an author, Hermann Hesse (1877–1962) spent many happy hours painting. Almost every day he captured surrounding landscapes or interiors in translucent watercolors. All three of his sons inherited his artistic talent. As the administrator of his estate, Hesse’s son Heiner set about making Hesse known as a painter. When Heiner died in 2003, he left behind many watercolors, drawings, and illustrations by his father.
This is the first publication to inventory these works; it also presents and discusses the entire spectrum of Hesse’s artistic oeuvre, while placing it in a biographical context. Light is also shed upon the correspondence between father and son. Produced in close cooperation with the Fondazione Hermann Hesse in Montagnola, this volume contains essays by authors such as Volker Michels, editor of the Suhrkamp edition of Hesse’s complete works, and Silver Hesse, the author’s grandson.
Exhibition schedule: Kunsthaus Stade, February 1– May 2014
