As if under a burning glass, the experiences of a lifetime between repression and the dream of freedom, coolly discerning science and natural philosophy, claustrophobic fear and euphoria come together in the oeuvre of Georg Büchner (1813–1837). Büchner is a master of the word and of metaphor. For him, both drama and comedy are weapons of equal measure: forms of self-defense and a means of liberation. This opulent volume permits taking a new look at this once-in-a-century figure, and it is evidence of the continuing relevance of the writings and language of the genius who died at the age of only twenty-three. Büchner’s life and work are examined based on paintings, sculptures, architectural models, manuscripts, anatomical specimens, film stills, and optical and physical instruments. Several texts and essays present the poet as an exceptionally gifted correspondent, a humorous philosopher, and an ambitious natural scientist with a profound knowledge of art and a genuine commitment to politics.
