Even with his spectacular early work, the Vienna Secession building (1898), Joseph Maria Olbrich (1867–1908) succeeded in creating a seminal structure that was described by Nikolaus Pevsner as the “pioneer of modern design.” Ten years later, his last works—especially the famous exhibition building and Hochzeitsturm  (Nuptial Tower) ensemble on Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt (1908)—struck the arc to architectural Expressionism.
During this final decade of creative work, Olbrich proved himself to be a universal artist. Completely devoted to the concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk, besides his broad spectrum of construction tasks he designed interiors, gardens, a cornucopia of practical and decorative objects, prints, and complete architectural exhibitions.
This comprehensive publication is a tribute to Olbrich, the universal artist, presenting his entire oeuvre in what is destined to become a standard work.

Exhibition schedule: Mathildenhöhe, Darmstadt, February 7–May 24, 2010 | Leopold Museum, Vienna, June 18–September 27, 2010
