Saul Steinberg (1914–1999) was an extremely versatile artist who created drawings, paintings, collages, and sculptures. However, he became well-known primarily for his many years of working for The New Yorker. Like his predecessors Hogarth and Daumier, Steinberg’s satire was more than just caricature: his wit went beyond the one-dimensionality of a cartoon. He combined a dark sense of humor and a keen eye for human vanities with an exuberant imagination and virtuoso skill in drawing.
This is the first book to give a German audience the opportunity to become acquainted with the work of one of the most peculiar geniuses of the twentieth century. Numerous drawings, collages, paintings, assemblages, paper-bag masks, postcards, and photographs—including many previously unpublished works—a chronology of his sixty-year career, and a selected bibliography make this volume a real treasure trove for both Steinberg fans as well as anyone interested in art and caricature.
