In the mid-nineties, Swiss photographer Guido Baselgia (*1953) took his camera and set out to explore the valley in which he grew up: the Engadin. He discovered a primitive area of the world; a highland region in which things developed unhindered. He went on to visit the plains of northern Finland and Norway, where, between the Arctic Circle and the Barents Sea, he found an undisturbed wasteland, a barren place which inspires deep personal reflection in every viewer.
During his recent travels to the Bolivian Altiplano and to the Atacama Desert in Chile, Baselgia took a further delve into the extreme. This time, he was hoping to capture a sense of infinity. Light is the dominant theme in Silberschicht, a collection which, alongside previous publications Hochland and Weltraum, forms the final part of a breathtaking trilogy. The themes which formed the basis of Guido Baselgia’s work ten years ago—the discovery of nature and questions regarding the authenticity and relevance of a picture—are explored with new depth in this masterful work.
