As Jacques Herzog has put it: "The most spectacular aspect" of the Maria Lacherboden Chapel by Innsbruck consists of a myriad of many-coloured, glowing segments of glass that gleam "light and dark" as though from out of "the very depths of the earth, from some cave or deep tunnel." Loosely laid on top of each other and only held together by wire mesh they break up the back wall of the building which the architect Gerold Wiederin and the artist Helmut Federle have created together as the meeting place for the six-yearly Marian Night Pilgrimages. In the midst of nature, set at the edge of a clearing, this concrete structure with its clear, geometric-crystalline cubes enters into dialogue with the weather-beaten, deformed rock formations around it. "This places emanates something inexplicable. Is it forbidden and sacrilegious, maybe an entrance tunnel of some kind? Or is it quite the opposite: a holy place, where there has been some miracle, a birth maybe?" (Herzog). This book sheds light on the religious aspect of Gerold Wiederin's work and how religious themes and symbols - such as birth, reincarnation, the Cross and light itself - may be expressed through architecture.
»Die kleine Broschüre gibt in zahlreichen Plänen und Zeichnungen sowie mit den vorzüglichen Fotos einen guten Eindruck der Idee des Architekten und der Situation vor Ort wieder und lädt zu einem Besuch ein.«
