Cityscapes is the theme of Hatje Cantz’s calendar for 2010. As we did with last year’s, which featured contemporary landscapes, we are once again venturing to offer a calendar featuring contemporary photographs that bear no visual resemblance to the usual clichéd calendar photo. Many photographers hesitate to permit their images to be used for calendars, because the term “calendar artist” has taken on negative connotations. Ours breaches this barrier. It shows the many ways of portraying urban space—from old to hypermodern, from elegant to heavily decaying, from bright as day to dark and mysterious, from perfect planning to uncontrollable chaos, from atmospheric urban scenery to the intimate portrait of a building—“illuminating” facets of the city as does no other calendar. Like last year, we are presenting only artists with whom we have already produced books or are about to publish one.
The artists:
Peter Bialobrzeski, Götz Diergarten, HG Esch, Miklos Gaal, Tom Hunter, Bill Jacobson, Kolkata Heritage Photo Project, Mathieu Bernard-Reymond, Hans Christian Schink, Carlo Valsecchi, Christian von Steffelin, and Tobias Zielony
