"It is my experience that marriage does not make one happier. This I write in my kitchen household book on Easter Sunday 1902, sitting in my kitchen, cooking roast veal." Paula Modersohn-Becker
The phrase “artist couples” immediately brings to mind Camille Claudel and Auguste Rodin, Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky, or Lee Miller and Man Ray. So it is all the more astonishing that there has not been a more comprehensive examination of this theme to date. This gap has now been bridged. In this publication, essays by renowned authors present a “developmental history” of the relationships of artist couples from the mid-seventeenth century to the present day. The spectrum ranges from Judith Leyster and Jan Miense Molenaer and Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera to Marina Abramovic and Ulay. The juxtapositions allow for intriguing comparisons and afford fascinating insight into the lives and work of the thirteen couples featured in the book. It discusses the values of different historical periods and places into context the conditions under which each individual couple lived.
