P – PORT
Friedrich "entered the harbor of matrimony" in 1818 by marrying Caroline Bommer. His painting On the Sailboat (c. 1818–1820) brings this event to mind. A couple looks out at an idealized city on the distant horizon, where several church spires are visible. According to a common interpretation, the couple's longing is thus directed less toward earthly happiness and more, in the Christian tradition, toward the afterlife and a life after death. The destination of the journey, however, remains blurred; what stands out is a universal feeling of wanderlust and a sense of new beginnings.
