Expressionist artists sought new means of expression in the visual arts, music, dance, literature, theater, film, and architecture. The history of this epoch is closely intertwined with the Rhine-Main district of Germany: important figures such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Paul Hindemith were born there; Alexej von Jawlensky and Max Beckmann spent many creative years in the region; and patrons and collectors, such as Hanna Bekker vom Rath, offered Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and other artists refuge. The Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain initiated a cooperative project dealing with this subject: Phänomen Expressionismus. From August 2009 to February 2012, more than twenty cultural institutions in Frankfurt am Main and the region participated in examining the turmoil and awakening that characterized this movement in the first quarter of the twentieth century. The volume documents this large-scale, successful project in both text and pictures. Informative essays by renowned authors expand and deepen the perspective.
