»For me, a fountain doesn't mean a big jet of water. It means humidity, the origin of life.« Jaume Plensa

Jaume Plensa (*1955 in Barcelona) is one of the most important Spanish artists of our time. His international breakthrough came in 1997 with major exhibitions and numerous public art projects, including the spectacular Crown Fountain in Millennium Park, Chicago. Constructed between 1999 and 2004 with support from the Crown Foundation, this fountain features water cascading down two monumental towers, as well as video and lighting effects. Alternating images, recorded on video by Plensa, show the faces of one thousand Chicagoans from all segments of society. Every twelve minutes these faces “transform” into gargoyles reminiscent of traditional fountains. The Crown Fountain, which swiftly became a popular public attraction, is comprehensively presented in this monograph, along with a chronology of Plensa's multi-faceted oeuvre.
