ASCO
This volume presents the multifaceted work of the Chicano performance and conceptual art group Asco (1972–87), which began as a tight-knit company of artists from East Los Angeles around Harry Gamboa Jr., Gronk, Willie Herrón, and Patssi Valdez. Asco set about through performance, public art, and multimedia to respond to turbulent sociopolitical times in Los Angeles, actions that ran parallel to the larger international context. Geographically and culturally segregated from the still nascent Los Angeles contemporary art scene and aesthetically at odds with the emerging Chicano art movement, Asco united to explore and exploit the broad spectrum of the conceptual. The publication provides a panoramic view of Asco’s nearly twenty years of artistic output through reproductions of previously unpublished art works, critical essays by art historians, and historical documents.
