The best chroniclers of what used to be East Germany are represented by the Ostkreuz agency. Founded in 1990 by photographers from Berlin and Leipzig, and based on the auteur principle, the agency was named after the S-Bahn station in Berlin that lies between Friedrichshain in the east and Lichtenberg in the west. Anyone wanting to go east must pass through this station. Sibylle Bergemann, Werner Mahler, Harald Hauswald, Ute Mahler, and Maurice Weiss create particularly sensitive photo series, which, in an authentic and unvarnished manner, tell of a country that no longer exists, yet is preserved in their pictures. A volume of photographs, Ostzeit not only presents their best work, but also functions as a travel guide at the same time. For our Collector’s Edition we have selected five great photographs that seem to us to symbolize everyday life in the German Democratic Republic.
