Against the background of the rise to power of the State of Moscow - the workshops in 14th to 16th century Moscow produced outstanding examples of Russian icons and book art. While Byzantine influences predominated in the 14th century, the early 15th century saw a new image of the human face, characterised by harmony and a sense of spiritual introspection, which by 1600 had given way to an increased interest in narrative styles. By the end of the 16th century the intermingling of biblical and everyday scenes was already pointing towards the 17th century and the rise of the individual. This publication presents introductory essays plus descriptions of the works in question by leading researchers into icon art, as well as numerous colour illustrations from the collections of the State Museums in Moscow and Vologda. In this work the reader will find a comprehensive overview of the glory of Russian icons and book art, documenting not only a multiplicity of artistic languages and themes but also the leading artists of the day.
