The paintings and painting groups as well as the more recent three-dimensional works of the Japanese artist Yuko Shiraishi place her in the tradition of Color Field Painting. Her compositional scheme is based primarily on vertically configured zones of color applied in some cases in multiple layers on the canvas and structured with the aid of combs, scrapers, rollers and other implements. Her works exhibit a harmonious balance. Their suggestive immediacy calls to mind the meditative paintings of Mark Rothko. This volume presents color reproductions of works from the years 1986 to 1995, of a selection of early collages and oils done before 1986 and 18 prints completed between 1980 and 1991. The artist: Yuko Shiraishi, born 1956 in Tokyo; 1974-76: lived in Vancouver; 1978-82: studied at the Chelsea School of Art; since 1984: numerous exhibitions in Europe and Japan; lives and works in London.
