What is a city? Or even better: what can a city be? The new director of the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Ralf Beil, not only asked himself this question but also presented it to a circle of selected artists for the purpose of exploring the potential dissolution of Wolfsburg’s boundaries, its metamorphosis, and its reinterpretation. The catalogue assembles the results of this creative experiment, which is not only confined to museum space but uses the entire city as a source of inspiration for interventions. Major artists’ projects are being developed specifically for the exhibition, such as a total installation by Julian Rosefeldt, performances by John Bock, or photographs by Eva Leitolf and Peter Bialobrzeski. The expansive and multiform works reflect not only the history and the present but also the future of a city between industrialization, mobilization, and digitalization, between mass and individual, local and global action. The participating artists: Franz Ackermann, Nevin Aladag, Christian Andersson, Ruedi Baur / Vera Baur, Peter Bialobrzeski, John Bock, Janet Cardiff / George Bures Miller, Don Eddy, Douglas Gordon, Heinrich Heidersberger, Peter Keetman, Anselm Kiefer, Eva LeitolfRémy Markowitsch, Arnold Odermatt, Peter Roehr, Didier Rittener, Julian Rosefeldt, Luc Tuymans, James Welling Exhibition: Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg , 24.4.–11.9.2016Peter Bialobrzeski (*1961 in Wolfsburg) studied communication design with an emphasis on photography from 1988 to 1993 at the Folkwangschule Essen and at the London College of Printing. His works have been exhibited in Europe, the US, Asia, and Africa. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the World Press Photo Award in 2003 and 2010, the Deutscher Fotobuchpreis in 2004, 2006, and 2010, the "Schönste deutsche Bücher" award in 2004, and the Dr. Erich Salomon Award of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie (DGPh) in 2012. Since 2002 he has been a professor of photography at the University of the Arts Bremen. Peter Bialobrzeski lives in Hamburg.
