The series opens with a new work by the Hungarian artist Tamás Waliczky. It is appropriate that the first artist to be presented was also one of the first artists-in-residence at the ZKM- Institute for Visual Media, where in 1992/93 Tamás Waliczky produced his highly acclaimed computer-animated film The Garden. After joining the staff of the Institute, he went on to produce further computer-generated works, which together constitute an acutely original and paradigmatic research into territories beyond the established compulsive strategies of spatial representation. In the context of the growing discourse concerning the ideological determinism of traditional perspective systems, Tamás Waliczky's work offers a radical and inventive heterogeneity. Focusing is made up of hundreds of photographs and can be viewed equally as a personal, digital photo-album as well as a visionary metaphor for Europe. Starting with the blurred, simulated photograph of an imaginary street on which a crowd of people has gathered, it is possible to investigate individual members of the crowd and the relationships between them. The camera in this case is the interface. The artist: Tamás Waliczky, born in Hungary in 1959; works as a painter, film cartoonist and computer-animation filmmaker. His works are in various public collections, including the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, the Oppenheimer Collection, Bonn, and the Scan Video Gallery, Tokyo.ì Focusing was commissioned by PHOTO 98: The UK Year of Photography and the Electronic Image. The work won an honourable mention at the Prix Ars Electronica, Linz, 1998.
