Tai-Jung Um
The outdoor sculptures of renowned Korean metal sculptor Tai-Jung Um (*1938) are prominent features of the urban landscape of Seoul. Keeping in close touch with current developments in American and European art, he ventured a redefinition of sculpture during the seventies and eighties - though he has never denied the influences of his specific cultural background and its roots in Buddhism. As a professor at the Academy of Art at the Korean National University, he has passed on his knowledge to numerous artists of a younger generation. Featuring a selection of his most significant sculptures, this book illustrates the development of Tai-Jung Um's oeuvre since the sixties, placing special emphasis on the utterly striking recent sculptures that demonstrate his masterful command of the material qualities of aluminum. Also included in the survey are the artist's fascinating large-scale pen-and-ink drawings - rarities in their own right, as artists in Korea seldom reveal the creative process involved in their works. Exhibition schedule: Georg-Kolbe-Museum, Berlin, September 20-October 30, 2005
