| The Historical in the Minimal

The works of Dutch painter Steven Aalders combine contemporary approaches with historical principles of painting. His strictly geometric paintings of color planes refer to 20th century abstraction and bring ideas from Constructivism or De Stijl as well as Minimal Art and color field painting into the present. At the same time, Aalders’s works also refer to classical pictorial traditions. Supra-temporal themes of time and place, proportion and color form the guiding ideas of his series of paintings. Thus, the title of the volume, Seasons, refers to Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s eponymous 16th-century painting cycle. This book is published on the occasion of Steven Aalders’s exhibition of the same name at the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo.

STEVEN AALDERS (*1959) has established himself as one of the most important contemporary painters in the Netherlands. Solo exhibitions in numerous museums, such as the SMAK in Ghent (2001) or the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague (2010). Aalders lives and works in Amsterdam.
