Old and new high-rise projects by the architectural offices of SOM are presented and discussed

SOM journal 7 is the most recent issue in a continuing series that presents the work of SOM in the context of a critical discussion. The process of review by a jury is a daring enterprise unique to SOM. The jurors for this issue were Erik Olsen, Rita McBride, Peter MacKeith, Juhani Pallasmaa, Luis Fernandez-Galiano, Joan Ockman, and Kenneth Frampton. The jury was held on May 19, 2010, at the Seagram Building in New York.

It includes the essays “Notes on the Techno-Aesthetic Evolution of High-Rise Form, 1896–1997” by Kenneth Frampton, “The Myth of Natural Growth II” by Thomas van Leeuwan, “Building Tall” by William Baker, “Emergence and the Power of One” by Mark Sarkisian, and “How the Leopard Got Its Spots: Lever House as a Skyscraper” by Nicholas Adams.

Featured projects:

Project Floyd, Geneva, Switzerland; PSAC II, Bronx, New York; Lotte World 2, Seoul, Korea; John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York; Chongqing River Tower, Chongqing, China; SOM Research; High Performance Building Enclosures; SOM Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River Region Plan Initiative 2010.
