The Dead Sea tells its own stories. Its salt crystals are like prisms. Through them, we see the world in a new way. The Israeli artist Sigalit Landau creates this seeing by using the saltiest sea in the world as her laboratory. Everyday objects are “baptized” by her by submerging them for months in the Dead Sea. Entirely covered in salt, they develop a hypnotizing effect.
To accompany the catalogue Salt Years, a visually stunning documentation of her works, we are pleased to add a matching artist edition to our program. It is composed of an eight-part black-and-white series that at first emerged in collaboration with the photographer Yotam From. These photographs were then transformed into screen prints. The prints can be purchased either separately or as a complete set, as a way to witness one of these special stories in its emergence.
A jet-black Hasidic dress is suspended in the water like a ghost, while over the course of time salt crystals nest in its dark fibers. After three months, the dress is completely white and hardened in a crystalline form. And this is not just any piece of clothing. It is a replica of the dress worn by the actress Hanna Robina in the play The Dybbuk (Between Two Worlds). In its development, the ghostly beauty of the salt reflects the story of the bride Leah and her visitation by a revenant.
