Robert Lucander's unmistakable artistic signature marks the works collected in this volume, which were done between 1989 and 2005: reduced portraits of outstanding aesthetic charm and great immediacy, painted on wood.

Since the mid-nineties, the interplay between painting and photography has played a decisive role in the work of Finnish artist Robert Lucander (* 1962 in Helsinki). Lucander selects his motifs from magazines, cheap novels, books, and record covers. His main interest is in portraits and other depictions of people, although not in the traditional sense. Instead, Lucander’s wooden panels are explicitly non-painterly. The figures mere allusions created by penciled hatching and outlines, and various depths are formed through the skilled inclusion of wood-grain patterns. The painting itself is limited to the application of enamels in a richly contrasting manner. This monograph encompasses works dating from 1989 to 2005, from Lucander’s early abstract phase to the wooden panel paintings and the current watercolors.Exhibition schedule:  Kunstmuseum Mülheim an der Ruhr May 14–July 23, 2006 · Museum Baden, Solingen, September 10–October 29, 2006
