Richard Prince works with a virtually inexhaustible source - reproduced pictures. He photographs advertisements and magazine pictures, manipulates shots of sunsets or assembles tableaus from picture clippings. And yet, this kind of "re-photography" is not meant as a criticism, rather, Prince is interested in the appeal of the images. He creates a 'second' reality, evoking questions about credibility in the viewer´s mind. In this, the act of photographing is an intimate, even personal moment in which Prince approaches the real image as if his object were you or I, or simply "the girl next door". The book of photographs of the same title is a collection of a number of electrifying, more recent works by Prince, taking stock of America today with a gripping blend of pre-made media pictures and real snapshots. The artist: Richard Prince, born 1949 at the Panama Canal Zone. First solo exhibition at the Ellen Scagrow Gallery, New York, in 1976. In 1988, participation in the Venice Biennale, in 1992 in the Kassel documenta IX. Since then, numerous solo and group exhibitions in the United States and Europe. Lives and works in New York.
