From the Bauhaus to socialist planning

What are the ideological implications of the visions and utopias of the modern city, in particular since the seventies? What impact do these concepts continue to have on urban life in metropolises and mega-cities around the world? What are the realities and resistances on which the interplay of planning, architecture, politics, economy, and culture founder? This volume examines architectural constructions from the thirties as well as socialist planning models of neoliberal boomtowns and current crisis scenarios from the perspective of art, pop, and exhibition and protest cultures. Works by around twenty artists—gouaches, paper cuts, photo series, video clips, multimedia installations—encounter historical documents and objects. The eponymous work Oh, My Complex by Minouk LIM visually exemplifies the dispute over the creation, distribution, and use of urban space.
