| Studio, architecture, and figurative portraits: echo chambers for the human soul

Martin Kasper (*1962 in Schramberg) transforms the architectural spaces of his tempera paintings into soulfully sensitive arenas: he creates places of emptiness, spaces free of thought, moments of relaxed calm, and atmospheres with unconventional auras. New, full-length portraits in which those depicted seem to float in front of the space are impressive extensions of the architectural pictures. The historical sculpture studios at the Künstlerkolonie Museum on the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt inspired Kasper to create a painting/installation that unites images of people and the architecture in a mutual echo, while at the same time dovetailing the real with the imaginary art space. This volume photographically documents the exhibition in situ and thus offers vivid insight into the artist’s body of work, whose mysterious interior worlds are further echoed in literary texts by writers such as Inger Christensen and W. G. Sebald.Exhibition schedule: Museum Künstlerkolonie, Mathildenhöhe, Darmstadt, February 2–April 21, 2014
