Marina Abramovic has consistently sought to bring art and life, artistic statement and personal experience together, bonding them into an organic whole in her art. In her performances since the early seventies, she subjects herself and her body to severe tortures and consciousness-expanding processes, confronting her audiences with extreme borderline situations - initiation rites, personal religious acts, relationship patterns and rituals of farewell. She has now "rewritten" them in Biography, with fascinating photographs that chronicle her life and her work as aspects of an indivisible unity. As author, director and leading actor, she has performed Biography, a hybrid work performance art and theatre, at the Kunsthalle in Vienna, the TAT in Frankfurt and the Hebbel Theatre in Berlin. This publication features photographs from this "theatre performance" along with Marina Abramovic's text "Biography", which she recited and acted out as performance artist and protagonist in the role of herself.
