Marcel Odenbach (*1953 in Cologne) is one of Germany’s preeminent video artists. Very early in his career, he started drawing connections between the German trauma of Nazi rule and the Rwandan genocide, between images of masculinity in Turkey and the role of women in Venezuela, between his own biography and the history of others. From his earliest videos, which were still conceived for presentation on monitors, to his installations featuring large projections, Odenbach has staged the moving picture and its acoustic accompaniment with great subtlety and formal variety. The works on paper constitute a separate and no less important part of his oeuvre. His works are complex narratives he develops by means of a distinctive collage-like technique, using recorded film and television footage, archival material, and pictures he has produced himself. Montage becomes a form of storytelling that interweaves history with the emotions of individual human beings and the artist’s own life. Exhibition schedule: Centro de Exposiciones SUBTE, Montevideo, Uruguay beginning April 3, 2014 | The exhibition will then travel to Caracas/Venezuela, Bogotá/Kolumbien, Lima/Peru, La Paz/Bolivien, Santiago de Chile/Chile
