This book presents photographic works by six young British artists of both sexes. All of them have in common that as post- modernist artists they do not use their camera to describe and thus to explain. Rather, they make use of the descriptive power of photography to ask questions. The works shown here are taken from the collection of the BMW Financial Services Group Great Britain and all date back to the year 1999: Sarah Jones' Dining Room series, photographs characterized by a psychological dynamics, or Sophy Rickett's night pictures, in which she toys with the secrets of the dark. Hannah Starkey contributed digital photographs made from the window of a betting office, telling us a story. Bridget Smith astounds with her photographs of the machinery of desires called Las Vegas. In his work Woman Reading a Possession Order, Tom Hunter refers back to Vermeer's Woman Reading a Letter at an Open Window, and David Shrigley's works presented in the book are characterized primarily by their humour, as he muses loudly about the absurdities of everyday life. Exhibition Schedule: Frans Halsmuseum, Haarlem September 8 - October 28, 2001
