Pride, greed, jealousy, anger, lust, gluttony, sloth: in the sixth century, Pope Gregory was the first to call the seven deadly sins the chief vices that would lead the sinner straight to eternal damnation. Artists began to address the theme in the Middle Ages, but over the centuries, the vices were imagined in different ways: from the allegories of Hieronymus Bosch or Pieter Breughel the Elder, to the genre paintings of the Netherlandish artists of the Golden Age, to the rediscovery of the theme by artists such as James Ensor, Alfred Kubin, Marc Chagall, and Otto Dix, or more recent treatments by Bruce Nauman, Cindy Sherman, or Jeff Koons.After an introduction featuring cyclical depictions, this comprehensive volume presents outstanding works from different epochs on each of the deadly sins.
