| Humorous and revealing scenes of life in Berlin in the twenties

The newspaper cartoonist and caricaturist Karl Arnold (1883–1953) regularly sojourned in Berlin during the years of the Weimar Republic, where, as he wrote, he aspired “to capture the peculiar goings-on in this mad city.” With the cool eye of the distanced observer and the skills of a professional draftsman, he preserved the people and scenes of Berlin life for the pages of Simplicissisimus and the Münchner Illustrierte Presse, images which are pointedly humorous and often revealing in their exaggerated characterizations. At a time marked by turmoil and strife, Arnold poked fun at any and all excesses and, not least, political extremes. This publication affords insight into Arnold’s artistic development and inquires into the perception of politics and current events revealed by the pictures.  Exhibition schedule: Berlinische Galerie, Berlin, June 11– September 27, 2010
