Karin Sander (born in 1957), recipient of the 1994 Rubens Prize, is neither a painter nor a sculptress, an architect nor a graphic artist - she is all of these in one. Employing elements of two- dimensional art, sculpture and spatial design, she achieves disturbing ironic or poetic interventions in existing, often very ordinary spatial ensembles, exhibition halls and galleries, which she "disguises", translates and interprets playfully, apparently almost in passing, with an extremely sparing use of resources. This book highlights the breadth of her artistic vocabulary as represented in such distinctly different works as the White Arcades in Lódz, the Fabric Room in Mönchengladbach or her Red Pillows and wall/floor pices in New York.
