Last week, we teamed with the architectural office of Kleihues + Kleihues to extend an invitation to an exclusive book presentation, as well as a discussion of the theme “Monumentalism and Poetry” at the BND headquarters.

Claudia Kromrei, professor of architectural theory, spoke with Bruno Kahl, president of the Bundesnachrichtendienst (Federal intelligence service); Jan Kleihues, architect; and Hanns Zischler, actor and flaneur; about the beauty of the building and its influence on the image of Berlin.

Based on Jan Kleihues’s master plan, a concept for the entire plot of land in Berlin intended for the new BND was realized, doing justice to both the urban location, as well as to the intelligence service’s expectations. In its distinct execution of a self-confident kind of architectural language, it forms a remarkable module that lends the site its essential identity. This monograph—providing extensive documentation of this unusual construction project—is being published to celebrate the completion of the complex.
