Gerhard Richter has been painting color panels since 1966, and they are considered central works in his oeuvre. His 1974 painting 4096 Farben and the large-format 4900 Farben from 2007 are key pieces in this group of works. The artist was particularly interested in making available in German the essays by Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, Peter Gidal, and Birgit Pelzer from the English catalogue 4900 Colours, published on the occasion of the presentation of 4900 Farben at the London Serpentine Gallery in 2008. Aside from the essays from the English catalogue, the present German volume also contains an insightful contribution on the combinational possibilities of the color squares written by Marcus du Sautoy, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford, as well as a statement on the work of Gerhard Richter by the artist himself.GERHARD RICHTER is one of the most famous painters of our time. Worldwide. His fascinating visual spheres are characterized by a unique originality and quality, in which the abstract and the figural intertwine and permeate each other.
