Over the past decades, the paintings by Gerhard Richter (*1932) have earned international accolades. However, to this day, only a smaller circle of connoisseurs have been familiar with his impressive works on paper. His first watercolors and drawings, which, like his paintings, were based on photographs, were executed in 1964. From then on, his works on paper appeared only periodically, after longer intervals of time, and were systematically organized into series. Richter’s watercolors reached their first apex in the eighties; the most recent works, which have much in common with the abstract paintings, date from 1997. Due to his ambivalence toward the genre, Richter did not exhibit his delicate drawings until 1985, but he continued producing them until 1999.Featuring a representative selection of watercolors and drawings, this expertly commented volume is devoted to this independent complex of works, documenting the wide range of techniques that have characterized Richter's oeuvre since the beginning. The works, some of which come from the artist’s own collection, provide an overview of his different developmental phases. Exhibition schedule: Albertina,Vienna, January 30–May 3, 2008
