Like no other artist, Franz Marc pursued the representation of the horse - an important topic in the fine arts - all his life. The painter and co-founder of the 'Blauer Reiter' created symbolic, visionary images which today belong to the very icons of modernism. The publication presents an overview over his paintings, drawings, gouaches and a number of famous postcards, beginning with nature studies from around 1905/06 to sketches Marc created ten years later shortly before his death at the front. In this short period of time, the horse theme became ever more important, especially after Marc moved from Munich to the secluded Upper Bavarian village Sindelsdorf near Kochel am See. In his efforts towards an "animalization of art", it is mainly the horse which becomes the expression of a better, purer world, both by virtue of exact observation and intuitive understanding. Shape and color increasingly gain in unusual simplicity and power. The monumental, pathos-laden animal visions from the period between 1910 and 1913 finally yield to Marc´s strife for ever more perfect forms of expression and the more abstract compositions of 1914.
