Now available as a special edition at an attractive price: an ambitiously designed volume featuring paintings of horses by Franz Marc that have become icons of modern art.

One of the great themes of visual art—the horse—engrossed Franz Marc, whose devotion to this subject was singular. The painter and cofounder of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) group created visionary, symbolic images that are today icons of modern art. This publication, now available as a special edition at an attractive price, provides an overview of his paintings, drawings, gouaches, and a series of famous postcards, beginning with nature studies from around 1905/06 and ending with sketches Marc did ten years later, just before his death at the front in World War I. In his efforts to “animalize art,” his precise observations and intuitive understanding turned the horse into an expression of a better, purer world. In the process, color and form gained an increasingly unusual simplicity and power. As Marc struggled to achieve a more perfect form of expression, his monumental, emotional visions of animals from the years 1910 to 1913 finally evolved into the abstract compositions of 1914.

»If there is anything that makes the public’s heart beat faster, and not just in museums, then it has to be Franz Marc’s paintings of horses.«
