We are already thinking about autumn. And not just because “normal” spring days tend to be absent these days. We are thinking of autumn because our fall program has just been published. Look forward to discovering many highlights!

The corona pandemic is becoming a test of endurance of the various social, political, and cultural systems worldwide. This threatening menace is showing us how closely we are all tied to the physical world. It is shaking our faith in the ease of international travel and in the ways that we interact and communicate outside of the digital world.

We hope you stay healthy and enjoy our program to the fullest. This preview contains splendid landscape paintings by Gerhard Richter and completely fresh insights on Late Gothic art. We introduce a new series devoted to the relationship between text and image, the voice of the artist, and the discussion of art; with any luck this will signal the beginning of a lively discussion itself—and not only among art experts.

Finally, we are very pleased to be celebrating the 75th anniversary of Hatje Cantz Verlag this year. It’s a birthday that makes us think back gratefully to our founder, Gerd Hatje (1915–2007), and about everyone who has helped to take the publishing company further. Above all, though, this anniversary is about a fresh outlook and books suited to our times.

We thank you for all of the wonderful encouragement and encounters over the past months.
