Using selected works of art on paper from the rich collection of the copper engraving cabinet, the development of the oldest pressure -graphic process is traced from its beginnings to the present. There are materials and special characteristics at the center of the selection, which spans the arc from the early and often only preserved woodcuts of the 15th century in a few copies to large -format contemporary works. Along this chronological axis, the view is aimed at various topics, such as the interplay of material and technology, color and black and white or the use of woodcuts. Technology experienced a first heyday at Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach or Ugo da Carpi in the Renaissance. Around 1900 Expressionists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde or Karl Schmidt-Rottluff rediscovered the woodcut for themselves and created masterpieces in a reduced, concise formal language. Surprising is the diversity with which artists are devoted to technology until the late 20th and 21st centuries: they are abstract compositions by Helen Frankenthaler, Hans Hartung or Ester Fleckner as well as figurative to photo -realistic works by Anselm Kiefer, Georg Baselitz or To see Franz Gertsch. In this way, the enormous abundance and lasting topicality of this printing technique are shown.
