28040-lawrence-carroll
Lawrence Carroll

Lawrence Carroll's works are metaphors for their gradual process of creation. The American artist builds solid wooden boxes, saws them up and reassembles them, sticks canvas between them, gives them a final coating of wax and oil paint and fixes them on the wall. He then integrates other "painterly elements" into these spatial installations, such as canvases which he folds up and piles on top of each other. Carroll sees these "Paintings/Wall Drawings" as biographical documents of his own life and as records of their production process. Looking at the seams and "wounds" of the works, the viewer can gradually trace back the working methods for himself. This creates a personal relationship to the objects and their subtly-constructed surfaces. This publication on Lawrence Carroll's work contains an illuminating and comprehensive essay by Richard Milazzo describing Carroll's artistic roots and strategies and the different stages of his life.
