In 1925, Margaret Stonborough commissioned Paul Engelmann, a student of Adolf Loos, for planning her new townhouse. Only one year later, however, her brother, the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein had taken the project under his wings, shaping - on the basis of his own systematic theory of aesthetics - both the construction and design of the structure as well as the smallest functional details of interior design. The building is characterized by the austerity of its cubic structures, a transparency achieved by a controlled flow of light, its spatial division and coloration as well as a formal functionalism and numerous technical innovations. The architect and artist Bernhard Leitner, whose efforts largely saved the palais from having to make room for a high-rise project in 1971, published his first extensive documentation on the architect Wittgenstein in 1973.
