18028-jochen-gerz
Jochen Gerz

Ten billboards by Jochen Gerz, each presenting a new motif every month, were on view in the city of Weimar for more than seven months. The artist positioned his "messages" within the context of the "Light on Weimar" project at the railway station and the Gauforum, at the Schloss and the Hotel Elephant, at Goethe's house and on the side wall of the Schillerhaus. Each panel confronted viewers with a large visual image and a lengthy text. Gerz told a story from which a rumour linking Belvedere and the Tower of Buchenwald gradually emerged. He wrote and illustrated a fictional narrative that ran behind, alongside and ahead of the everyday life of the city of Weimar, winding and spinning a web around it. The artist's fictitious commission to investigate the rumour of the "Light on Weimar" was in actuality a commission from the curator, who thus created a bond between the artist and the city and posed Gerz the task of realising a project for the "Kulturstadt Europas 1999" program - a fictional story focused on a specific objective: a discussion of possible approaches to coming to grips with the lyrical promise of salvation expressed in German Classicism and the crimes of Fascism next door, in Buchenwald.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/8948/8049/files/odoo_9783775790048_de66a1e1-7eaa-4973-8724-edd4341a3a7e.jpg?v=1744103775
