Born in \u003c?xml:namespace prefix = \"st1\" ns = \"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags\" \/\u003e\u003cst1:City w:st=\"on\"\u003eWeissenburg\u003c\/st1:City\u003e, \u003cst1:country-region w:st=\"on\"\u003eGermany\u003c\/st1:country-region\u003e, he attended Moritz Heymann’s private art school in \u003cst1:City w:st=\"on\"\u003eMunich\u003c\/st1:City\u003e, after which he relocated to \u003cst1:City w:st=\"on\"\u003e\u003cst1:place w:st=\"on\"\u003eParis\u003c\/st1:place\u003e\u003c\/st1:City\u003e, where he took classes at the Ecole de la Grande Chaumière and met artists such as Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Juan Gris, and Georges Rouault. He was a friend of Robert Delaunay’s, whose color compositions impressed him as much as the work of the Cubists. Hofmann established himself in the \u003cst1:country-region w:st=\"on\"\u003eUnited States\u003c\/st1:country-region\u003e in 1932, where he ultimately exercised crucial influence over an entire generation of postwar American artists through his art schools in \u003cst1:State w:st=\"on\"\u003eNew York\u003c\/st1:State\u003e and \u003cst1:City w:st=\"on\"\u003e\u003cst1:place w:st=\"on\"\u003eProvincetown\u003c\/st1:place\u003e\u003c\/st1:City\u003e.
