Unlike other, conventional portraits, the viewer learns nothing from these pictures about the names or identities of the people being depicted; they remain anonymous. Sometimes shown from behind or sometimes in profile, the subjects are never seen from the front: they do not look directly at the viewer and seem to be lost in thought. Søndergaard is primarily interested in capturing a particular state of mind, an introspection reflected in small, subtle movements.
